THE UPTOWN FIVE: Summer of ’98
A Nostalgic Illustrated Story of Friendship, Love & Life in Spanish Harlem
Five friends. One unforgettable summer. A neighborhood full of stories.
Welcome to Spanish Harlem, New York City, in the summer of 1998, where friendships run deep, music fills the streets, fashion makes a statement and growing up means discovering that life and love aren't always what they seem.
Meet La’Nia (LaLa), Simone (Mona), Marisol (Mari), Darius (D), and Javier (Javi)—five friends navigating the excitement, drama, romance, and unexpected challenges of young adulthood in one of New York City's most vibrant neighborhoods.
From neighborhood stoops and lively street corners to rooftop gatherings beneath the city skyline, The Uptown Five: Summer of ’98 captures a time when friendships were everything, relationships were complicated, and every summer held the promise of something unforgettable.
But as the summer unfolds, familiar friendships begin to shift, unexpected feelings emerge, and unspoken emotions threaten to change the dynamics of the group. Between laughter, loyalty, jealousy, and love, the Uptown Five discover that some summers leave memories—and others change everything.
More than a comic book, this is a nostalgic journey back to the summer of ’98.
Featuring vibrant, fashion-inspired comic illustrations, expressive characters, and a storyline filled with personality, humor, and heartfelt moments, The Uptown Five brings the energy of late-1990s New York City to life.
